Cardiothoracic surgery involves surgery of the heart and lungs. Indeed, cardiothoracic surgeons often sub-specialise into either cardiac or thoracic surgeons respectively.
Cardiopulmonary bypass allows for a large number of cardiothoracic procedures to be performed safely and its core principles are important to learn. Bridging treatments to transplant are also key concepts of cardiothoracics
Cardiac surgery has two main procedures in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and valvular surgery, and patient selection for both these procedures is essential. For thoracic surgery, management of pleural disease and lung malignancy forms the mainstay of operative interventions.
